Spring is almost here, which means it’s time for spring cleaning! Chances are you — and the rest of your family — are spending A LOT of time at home these days, which makes it all the more important to clean and disinfect your home. Here’s a great video from CleanMySpace.com on how to keep your home clean and germ-free:
In addition, it’s super important at a time like this to get outside for some fresh air and sunshine (at a safe distance from others, of course)! While you’re at it, here’s a spring cleaning checklist to clean and maintain your home’s exterior as well:
Deck Checklist
- Clean plastic patio furniture with a non-toxic cleaner, or use shaving cream. Apply liberally and let the cleaner set for a few minutes before scrubbing.
- If you have potted plants or planters on a wooden deck, slip “feet” under them. This creates a barrier between the wood and potted plant that helps prevent damage to your deck.
- Get your deck into shape by cleaning with a pressure washer. Fix loose nails or split wood and give the deck a fresh coat of stain or sealant.
Landscaping Checklist
- Try planting plants that are native to your area. Not only do they grow well in your climate, they are also low-maintenance, require less water, and save you money.
- If you have a sprinkler system, make sure it is working properly. Check each area in your yard to see if your yard is getting too much or too little water. Adjust as needed.
- Ensure that stepping stones are stable. Place sand or stone dust underneath loose stones.
- Inspect play sets and tighten any loose components. Pressure wash and clean. Lastly, apply water sealant to wooden play sets.
Window & Siding Checklist
- Pressure wash your home’s exterior and patch any problem areas by sanding, priming, and painting, depending on the surface material.
- Inspect the caulking around windows and doors on the exterior of your home. If the caulking is deteriorating, reapply a quality exterior sealant.
- Clean the windows and screens and patch any holes in your screens. Be sure to tighten any loose window frames.
Air Conditioning Checklist
- Remove plant debris such as dead leaves and twigs near your HVAC unit.
- Change the filter regularly once every 90 days, or more often if you have pets or allergies.
- Have a professional inspect your air conditioner to do any tune ups or maintenance before summer arrives.
Roof & Gutter Checklist
- Remove any debris from gutters and downspouts. Run a hose on the roof to check that gutters are draining away from your home properly. Inspect gutters for any puncture holes or cracks and replace as needed.
- Check the condition of your roof. Remove any debris such as leaves, moss, and algae to extend the life of your roof. Have a qualified contractor inspect and replace any missing or damaged shingles.
- Use caution while on your roof. If you are not comfortable with going up and down a ladder, contact a professional for help.
