If you haven’t done so already, please take the necessary steps to prepare so that you and your family can stay safe during the storm.
We realize that, for some customers, this may mean leaving your home and evacuating the area, so we urge you to follow the advisories issued by state and local authorities. Be sure to know your local evacuation route(s) and the location of shelters in your area, should it become necessary. The safety of you and your family is our priority.
Here are a few quick reminders as you prepare:
- Important documents, such as insurance policies and helpful contact information, should be placed in a waterproof container that you can access easily. You can access your Tower Hill policy information online with Customer Portal. (Be sure to create your account ahead of time, if you haven’t already. You’ll need information from your policy declarations page or billing documents to register.)
- Any medications and supplies for members of your family that may need extra care — children, grandparents, and pets — are best kept in a waterproof container, too.
- Non-perishable food and water supplies, along with trash bags and paper items, can be kept in a central location in the event you need to evacuate quickly.
- Flashlights, lanterns, and weather radios should be fully charged, and/or have extra batteries close by.
- Fill your automobile tank up with gas (or diesel) before the storm.
- Because ATMs and credit card scanners may not be operable during a power outage, be sure to have cash on hand.
- Get the latest storm updates, forecasts, and preparation advice by visiting Tower Hill’s Storm Center.
During and after the storm.
- Especially when winds are high, the safest place in your home is generally a room in the center with no windows or exterior doors.
- Cell phone service may not be reliable, so keep a battery-powered radio handy and tune in to weather alerts.
- When it is safe to go outside, watch out for downed power lines and potentially dangerous items that may be hidden by debris or standing water.
- Do not attempt to drive in the storm, but if you do, be especially cautious traveling in flooded areas after the storm. Standing water and puddles can be much deeper than they appear.
- If your electricity is out and you are using a portable generator for power after the storm, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use caution. Never use a generator in an enclosed area, because the engines emit carbon monoxide. Generators should only be used outside, away from doors, vents and open windows. Do not operate the generator during the storm or in wet conditions; the fuel is highly flammable and generators produce significant voltage.
