My name is Calvin Clarke, and I’m a Lead Underwriting Technician at Tower Hill.

As a Lead Underwriting Technician, my job is all about guiding, teaching, and supporting my fellow Underwriting Technicians. I want to see my teammates succeed in their roles while helping them prepare for future opportunities in Underwriting. Collaboration is a big part of that. I don’t just work with my team but with the entire Underwriting Department to make sure we’re all on the same page and growing together.

Underwriting Technicians gather supporting documents and carefully notate policies before sending them to Underwriters for review. When we do that, I think we really help set up our fellow teammates for success and provide what they may need beforehand. People may think it’s boring to examine documents all day long, but it’s more about verifying, identifying, and investigating anything that needs a closer look. When you work with a great group of people, it makes work exciting and fun!

Before joining the insurance industry, I spent nearly 17 years in the beer business, working in warehouse operations, delivery, phone sales, customer service, and as a night shift supervisor. I made the switch to insurance because I wanted a more structured schedule, less physically demanding work, and a career that would challenge me in new ways.

“Seeing someone come in unsure of themselves, set goals, and then surpass their own expectations is the best part of what I do.”

One of my favorite parts of the job, and I know this might sound odd, is reviewing inspections. I like identifying conditions and spotting unique details in inspection photos. It keeps things interesting and adds a bit of an investigative element to the work.

I started my insurance career at another company but quickly learned that bigger isn’t always better. Choosing Tower Hill was one of the best decisions I’ve made. It’s the perfect mix of a family-oriented culture with the resources of a larger company. I can walk through the building, everyone will greet you, and you never feel like just an employee. It was like that when I started and is still like that to this day!

One of the most rewarding parts of my job is mentoring others. Sometimes I think I might have missed my calling as a coach because I love watching new employees grow and develop. Seeing someone come in unsure of themselves, set goals, and then surpass their own expectations is the best part of what I do.

One thing that always stands out to me about Tower Hill is how we come together during catastrophe events. When volunteers are needed, the response is overwhelming. I’ve taken calls during these events, and our policyholders have been nothing but appreciative, even in the middle of difficult situations. That’s what makes Tower Hill special. It’s a company that truly cares, and I’m proud to be part of it.
